Why Cork?

Cork is a natural raw material which is 100% biodegradable, recyclable and renewable. The cork used in all our yoga equipment is derived from Quercus suber, commonly known as the cork oak tree, a medium-sized evergreen oak that lives about 150-250 years.

Suberin is the natural waxy substance that is found in cork that makes the surface non-slip. This provides a persistent grip, even during the sweatiest yoga practice. When combined with natural rubber on the bottom of the mat, it creates a non-slip base on the floor surface.

Unlike most synthetic materials used in yoga equipment, cork is naturally antimicrobial and contains zero PVC’s or harmful chemicals. Cork naturally resists mould, mildew and bad smells, making it an ideal choice for people who suffer from asthma and allergies.

Not a single tree is cut down to harvest cork. Rather, the bark is stripped every 9 years. Cork oak trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere in order to regenerate their bark.

Cork helps keep our planet clean

A harvested cork oak tree absorbs up to five times more carbon dioxide than one that isn’t harvested. Natural cork is an eco-friendly material that biodegrades completely, and can be recycled without releasing any toxic substances. Overall, cork lasts longer and is better for our health and the environment. There’s no better reason to make the switch to cork!
